Reena’s Exploration Challenge and dVerse Lai form — Blind Shrike

Blind Shrike ………… by Jade Li

Shrike

Loggerhead Shrike by Carol Allen Anfinsen

Axe’s bleeding edge
Raised o’er outstretched necks
To strike.

Gene-spliced monsters fledge
As architects pledge
“Safe-like.”

Evolution sledged
On extinction’s ledge
Blind shrike.

A Butcher Bird, or Shrike is a predatory songbird, fearless and bold. It is a ferocious killer that will impale its victims.

This lai form poem (please see here and here for more information on the form) is written for Reena’s Exploration Challenge, whose prompt this week is BLEEDING EDGE, defined as the very forefront of technological development, as well as being an entry for this month’s lai form challenge at dVerse.

Reena’s Exploration Challenge #86 – The Bleeding Edge

The Nleeding Edge ….
By Michael

PROMPT

This week’s prompt consists of two words –

BLEEDING EDGE

The dictionary meaning is

the very forefront of technological development.

Go where your imagination takes you.

Gordon Edge was bleeding.

In itself that was not unusual as Gordon Edge often bled.

Gordon was a whiz at technology and was accredited with the invention of the Edgeathon, a computer-based machine that could with amazing accuracy predict the winning numbers for the Saturday Lotto.

The bleeding was all in his mind, he was sure, as though it was noticeable Gordon felt the bleeding was all an illusion despite the fact his mother would often remark that a large number of blood-soaked handkerchiefs he put in the wash each week was a tad disturbing.

Gordon’s Edgeathon was at the forefront of technology and was in great demand. As he had the only one in existence and had resisted all overtures to give…

Reena’s Exploration Challenge #85 – A Woman of the Bush.

A woman of the bush … by Michael

Michael's avatarMorpethroad

cryptic

She was a woman of the bush

Her home was among the tangle of vines

Her wisdom sought after

She could solve most things if you bothered to listen.

She’d tell you to feel the connection

Put an ear to the trees

Take in all you heard.

You could find her most days tending her garden

The herbs she grew had a purpose and a tale

If you asked what or why

She’d fix you with her stare

Then explain in no uncertain terms

The reason why each herb was precious.

This one would cure this and that,

Another for easing pain, settling nerves,

Mix them together, and you created a potion

Put you to sleep or fill you with vigour.

She was ever willing to share,

For she was a woman of the bush

Whose home among the vines

Kept her safe from greedy eyes.

On The Cusp

On the cusp …… by Jim Adams

newepicauthor's avatarA Unique Title For Me

The breakthrough is near, we are heading in the right direction and change is evident.  Being on the brink is exciting, but something must give to push us over the edge.  We are on the bleeding edge of a constitutional crisis here in the US, which some people view as a problem.  I feel that this conflict over the way our government is functioning must come to a head soon.  Things haven’t been going good between Democrats and Republicans for a while now and it has developed into a really bad situation with fundamental governing laws no longer being followed and there are many other issues that we are unable to resolve.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi House along with Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler have both declared this country to be in a constitutional crisis.  Congress does not enjoy having its feathers ruffled, or being snubbed, so subpoenas must…

Flash Fiction: Embrace

Embrace …. by thedarknetizen

the dark netizen's avatarThe Dark Netizen

Do you remember me?

We used to come here in our youth. You, the merchant Prince, and I a mere farmer girl. Do you remember how you embraced me here, hidden from the eyes of the world?

I remember. I remember how you brought me here after your marriage to some Southern Princess was decided. You pinned me against this tree and impaled me there with your sword.

I remember how the woods embraced me after that. I became a part of them, a vengeful forest spirit. Now you come back here after so many years. Let me complete my vengeance.

Let me embrace you…
