Repost: Ghazal

A ghazal in English, which comes closest to the Urdu form —- by arevivedwriter

This is a re-post of a ghazal that I wrote a couple of years ago. I am sharing with DVerse for this month’s poetry form.

“Call Me Hagar”

I decided to write another ghazal today. I normally wouldn’t post twice in one day but was very happy with how this turned out! It was inspired by Agha Shahid Ali’s poem “Tonight”. I am not feeling this way currently but am very familiar with the struggles described in the following poem.

I feel alone, connection’s far tonight,

I see no smiling star tonight.

Even the moon has forgotten its light.

Shrouded, it makes the sky dark as tar tonight.

My mind sees a battlefield near:

What emotions will I need to spar tonight?

Depression, restlessness, fear, anxiety?

What demons come to wound and scar tonight?

Yet hope alone, even now, can fight

The darkness; complete despair I’ll bar tonight.

Taking up Reena’s Exploration Challenge#87
by Reena Saxena. The challenge is to write based on the image prompts above and below. This is my fictional response. Thanks for the mind prompt Reena.

We walk our lonely paths of quiet decay. Structures, once vibrant and alive, are worn down by the passage of time and buffeted by the winds of indifference. Old ways of being morph into future generations and new structures are born.

Eight babies poured from my mother’s womb in eight years, then someone turned off the tap and the babies stopped flowing. I was the fourth of the eight children my parents raised in our three bedroom apartment. The apartment was unending chaos. With my father absent ten hours a day my mother tried hard to cope but was heavily outnumbered. I remember pouring Coca Cola on top of my cereal for breakfast, eating three different flavours…

Truth and Contrasts

Truth and Contrasts by VJ Knutson

VJ's avatarOne Woman's Quest

Dark this passage,
blustery the winds
that rattle the glass,
cold seeping through cracks,
light receding.

prabhakar-1

Life, we are sold,
should be parties
and castles – dreams
without limits –
disingenuous campaign

Truth lies somewhere
in-between –
elusive, yet enticing –
I would exit this isolation
shake the starkness
for but a glimpse.

(Images supplied by Reena’s Exploration challenge.  Also inspired by Ragtag Community’s prompt: blustery, and Fandango’s: disingenuous.)

हवाई किले

Amit Agrawal’s second take on Exploration Challenge #87. English translation in Comments section….

hecblogger's avatarPlaying with words

Bubble Bubble – #writephoto

H.R.R. Gorman's avatarLet Me Tell You the Story of...

dancers

Don’t summon weird girls

Or have fortune told.

They’ll tell you bent tales

From their wooden souls.

Wicker women they,

Casting spells of old,

Summon dreadful haunts

And kings’ lives remold.

Critique not his pride –

Fault the coven fold

For her unclean hands

And his grim parole.

Because of the way my week’s scheduling works, I have never done one of the famous #writephoto prompts. This week, I thought the picture prompt was too interesting to ignore, so I decided to shove Count Vlad out of the way.  Thanks to Sue Vincent for these lovely pictures!

Moreover, this poem is about Macbeth, my 100%, no doubt favorite Shakespeare play.

The path was chosen for her,

unafraid, yet worn,

she knew she would walk alone,

sans fear, guilt in tow

towards the darkness

Reena’s Exploration Challenge #86

PROMPT

This week’s prompt consists of two words –

BLEEDING EDGE

The dictionary meaning is- the very forefront of technological development.

The Bleeding Edge: behind the terrifying new Netflix documentary

The $400bn medical device industry is exposed in a horrifying look at a string of products that have wreaked havoc on patients

A terrifying new documentary carries a stark warning that a nightmare has been lurking in the medical industry for decades and it might be in your body.

…

“If we can’t change the laws and we can’t convince companies to put moral issues above profits, then all of us really have to be vigilant,” said The Bleeding Edge’s producer, Amy Ziering. “My great hope is you watch this film and then you are really, really, really careful and ask a lot of questions and do a lot of research.”
