There are hearts, arrows and names etched on the tree trunk – by lovers who separated later. There are verses inscribed in a long-forgotten language, which nobody can decipher. The lines on the tree trunk denote its age, but there are no botanists around to analyse. The tree carries pain, joy, wisdom – but there are no writers around to describe it.
The tree has been cut today, to make way for a new road. An era died with it – it had to- nothing is forever.

Trees are a living testament to nature, life. They should be preserved whenever possible but unfortunately, that isn’t the norm unless they’ve been put under legal protections. Ironic when nature is destroyed in the name of development/improvement.

It is sad. Trees die sooner or later anyway, and it’s a shame to make it so much sooner because of development.

Certain trees have a longer life than humans, if we allow them to live and care.

Ah, but there was a writer around. You. You spoke for the tree.

It’s sad to see trees cut down in the name of ‘development.’

Without any effort to shift or replant them elsewhere …

too true (the luddite in me shouts)…. (reminds me of a story, to horrible not to be true, how the second (or third) oldest tree was killed by a graduate student out to bolster his botany* dissertation with physical evidence.
*technically, that would be dendrology

There should be a system of taking the assessor to the spot.

Wow. Very insightful! There’s a special place in my heart for trees and you definitely touched it. Thank you for sharing this piece, Reena.

Thanks! Somehow, trees have not earned an equal place and concern as animals.
