Tree trunk

There are hearts, arrows and names etched on the tree trunk – by lovers who separated later. There are verses inscribed in a long-forgotten language, which nobody can decipher. The lines on the tree trunk denote its age, but there are no botanists around to analyse. The tree carries pain, joy, wisdom – but there are no writers around to describe it.

The tree has been cut today, to make way for a new road. An era died with it – it had to- nothing is forever.

  1. Trees are a living testament to nature, life. They should be preserved whenever possible but unfortunately, that isn’t the norm unless they’ve been put under legal protections. Ironic when nature is destroyed in the name of development/improvement.

  2. too true (the luddite in me shouts)…. (reminds me of a story, to horrible not to be true, how the second (or third) oldest tree was killed by a graduate student out to bolster his botany* dissertation with physical evidence.

    *technically, that would be dendrology
