Cathy’s mind harked back to her college days. It was a conservative township in the 1970’s, when phone calls from boys, were looked at suspiciously, by the parents of nubile girls. It was the era before cellphones and caller ids were invented.
Cathy was often engaged by her male classmates, to dial a number, wait for the intended recipient of the call to come on line, hand over the receiver to the classmate, and ….. disappear.
The hunger for love grew unabated, as she saw her scarred reflection in the mirror. She waited every evening, for her phone to ring.

Oh, poor Cathy! You told the story well, engaged our affection for this pleasant, helpful girl, and then wrenched our feelings with the final sentence. Good flash fiction!

Oh, the frustration! Always a friend, never a sweetheart. Someday…and she’ll be better off for having waited. (As so many parents try to tell their anxious teens.😯)
Good take on the prompt.

Gee, that’s tough. Poor girl.
I remember those days well with the telephones that weren’t “portable.” How we survived, I’ll never know.
Nice work, Reena.

Reena, well done. I feel sad for Cathy that she was the one calling for the boys and none wanted to call her.

Poor Cathy …. can understand her state of mind. The era in which she lived added to her longing.
