Take-over

Oh, why do they have to make a laughing stock of themselves? He spoke passionately about building a new world. She supported him animatedly, demonstrating the force of half the country’s population. The screens behind them showed scenes of violence, junkies being hauled out of a club, and people dying unattended in hospitals. The sabotage … Continue reading Take-over

He called after more than a decade. “My daughter is flying to the USA from Delhi. She might call if any assistance is required. “Sure.” The last I’d heard about him was the annulment of his week-long marriage. Maybe he married a widow or divorcee later, and this is a foster child. He was my … Continue reading Monochrome beauty

Connections

I remember a poem called ‘A reason or a season” widely in circulation on social media a couple of years back. The poet opined that people come into our lives with a specific purpose, and we should let them go when they choose to go.The purpose has been fulfilled. What disconnects is a vital clue … Continue reading Connections

Pete Linforth on Pixabay I spoke to two friends today - a corporate executive and a doctor. Both echoed the same thoughts in response to “How are things with you?” The fifty plus generation does not have much paid work left to do,  We have hit a glass ceiling. Experience is an impediment to those … Continue reading Bone-Weary

I am taken aback by the hiss of dissent
an angry spluttering follows
splattering me with icy coldness
on this mellow winter morning!

I try again
this time there is empty noise
the hissing continues
with a bit of frothing at the mouth!

I exclaim loudly in anger
muttering profanities under my breath
I should have taken the nut brown appearance yesterday
as a portent of things to come!

The tear shaped drop hanging precariously
clinging for life to the faucet
seems to smirk at my tears of frustration
adding to the unmitigated covid anxieties!

We don’t get any snow

play hooky at will to throw my life out of gear!

Frantic calls hither and thither
reveal the vile, bitter truth
the rising ammonia levels had forced
the water board to halt the supply!

The dry…

A day without water …….. by Radhika

Last April that awful day, when water left us high and dry

a lesson learnt the hard way, will stay with me forever.

Summer announced its arrival with the mercury soaring,

adding to the woes, the pandemic locked us indoors.

The old leaky connection pipe succumbed under pressure at night,

the next morning the taps at home went dry.

A call to the water board confirmed our worst fears,

the wait for a tanker would be an endless one.

With shutters of shops down, the repair too would be a prolonged affair

fractious moods ensued a torrent of rants and expletives,

a house full of people letting off their steam,

finally sapped of energy, the listless souls vented muffled sighs.

A kind neighbour lent us a can of water,

Rationing its use, the trailer made us realise,

we don’t want to watch the movie, “A day without water”…

Loggerheads

You let me down, when I’d trusted you for life. I can see the pain in your insanity. You could not handle rejection. But you overlooked the fact that I have a right to live my life my way. A relationship does not mean surrender of individual rights. There was nothing to stop you from … Continue reading Loggerheads
