Lost At Sea

Lost at Sea ….. an intriguing story by Jim Adams

newepicauthor's avatarA Unique Title For Me

It came from somewhere too far to walk, from as far away as the most unreasonable desire, the most devastating hope.  It was a call of desperation pleading for help.  Dozens heard Amelia Earhart’s final, chilling pleas for help, as she ended up marooned on a desert island.  It is thought that Earhart and Fred Noonan who served as her navigator likely took refuge on Gardner Island, now Nikumaroro, a then-uninhabited small island located 2,600 miles off the cost of New Zealand.  Amelia Earhart waded into the Pacific Ocean and climbed into her downed and disabled Lockheed Electra 10E.  She started the engine, turned on the two-way radio and sent out a plea for help, one more desperate than previous messages.  The high tide kept getting higher, and soon it would suck the plane into deeper water, cutting Earhart off from civilization and any chance of rescue.

Prose poetry- Where did the desire came from?

Where did the desire come from – Prose Poetry by Sadje

Sadje/ Sadie's avatarKeep it alive

This week Reena challenged us to write a prose poem based on this line;

An excerpts from the book “Extinctions” by Sharmishtha Mohanty. Her new book is positioned as “a book of poetry in prose.”

It came from somewhere too far to walk, from as far away as the most unreasonable desire, the most devastating hope.

The desire was always there but hidden in the folds of unseen barriers. It was hidden yet near to the core of my heart, but always suppressed. Suppressed yet hoping against hope to get a chance to break through the rigid barriers that kept it imprisoned.

I was firm to lock this longing inside my soul for I was always afraid to let it out. Always afraid to let it be seen or associated with me. For I don’t want to be deemed weak or greedy. I don’t want to be seen…

Crime and Punishment

He’s in therapy now, which he hates, but they tell him it’s the only way he’ll be free of the depression and crippling anxiety and so he’s talking about his childhood and about a time when the chaos in his home was so extreme, his parents both drunk and his mother actually physically attacking his father, that he hid in his bedroom and went to school next day, hungry and with his homework unfinished.

He firmly believes this home atmosphere is at the root of his dark moods, but to his amazement, the therapist hones in on the story he told about the punishment that the teacher gave him because he hadn’t finished his homework.

Please Miss, please…

La Calma … by Jude Itakali

The air is foul with discontent
Yet soul is rife with good intent
These withered shrubs are heaven-sent!
My tears drip life upon what’s lost
In me I find what I need most
I trim and prune forgotten gifts
with pain and hope I seal those rifts
Like floral blooms through barren cracks
I water gloom with joys once stacked
To scent the air at any cost
In me I find what I need most

The scent of hope beckons lost joy
Want and Will cajole bliss gone coy
What’s within I long to enjoy…
Who am I if not things I do
my hands and lips will tell it true
This vase of life I’m meant to fill
where nature moulds, then nurture heals
Let go of fear and share your dream
‘Dreams beget dreams’ – fate’s secret whim
The old and new are one not two

Shame

Empowered Women's avatarEmpowered Women

She says she did not get the kind of daughter she wanted. I’ve just poured myself a drink which she considers sacrilege.

One fine day, uncharacteristically she heaps praise on me. I’ve carried the garbage out twice because the house help did not turn up.

Someone else who moves about with a duster in hand all day is efficient and lovable. But me – banging the keyboard or speaking in sessions – am not feminine enough.

Rejection has been the predominant theme from childhood.

I don’t know where to place the shame. She is not the kind of mother I wanted.
