Mountains of the unknown

He carries centuries in his chest,
mountains of silence and scars.
lava settles where poetry lived,
fury seeps through cracked restraint.

When he speaks,
the world reinvents abuse
When he screams
music beats a hasty retreat

housed where the insane live
or imprisoned with criminal records
an object of research for psychologists
fire remembers what oppression forgot.

Poetics – Lyric Petrologies

P.S. Adding two lines in an article I just came across –

Sometimes silence is not the absence of courage.

Sometimes it is the sound of a person carrying a truth too heavy for words.

  1. Powerful words and terrifying, Reena, these “mountains of the unknown.” Filled with madness and rage. What have they endured or seen or instigated that they seethe so, have lost all peace and restraint, but the cruelty and pain that only humans can inflict on one another?

  2. I like your use of “cracked restraint.” “The world reinvents abuse” is very intriguing. The idea that abuse was/is invented, and that at some point it could be so abolished and forgotten that it would need to be reinvented. There’s a lot there.
