Dark Thoughts

Person reading beside a mountain river surrounded by forest

violence dripping from
speech, visuals
media reports
venomous words
mental abuse
-collects in pools
around your feet
obstructing movement

you drag yourself
looking for a boat
but the boatman’s oars
are knives and swords
the sky grows darker
the clouds speak to you
but refuse to rain

all that you see and sense
is not a fraction of
the violence within
-unexpressed hatred
behind civilised masks
-simmering resentment
in tears held back
-awaiting revenge
In this lifetime or next
blood encircling your feet
builds a connect
It is all that I thought
but never dared to act

myocardial infarctions
organ failure
the body gives away
pressured by thought

  1. A powerful and profound poem that shows how violence can also reside in words, thoughts, and what we keep inside. It leaves me reflecting on how pain and resentment, when not expressed in a healthy way, can also end up affecting us from within.
