The Ledger of Life

WordPress has a curious way of motivating its writers: “You are on a — day streak.” For a time, I lived by that counter. I posted every single day — more than 500 in a row — just to keep the streak alive. The challenge was simple: don’t miss a day, don’t break the chain.

But last week, at fifty‑five days, life intervened. I missed one. The streak vanished, and with it, my will to continue. Suddenly, the silence felt liberating: It’s fine if I don’t write today. Nobody is counting.

Calendars and clocks are relentless shepherds. They push us forward, measuring progress in neat boxes and ticking hands. Yet the direction they dictate is not always the best one. Sometimes, the “path not taken” whispers from the shadows, tempting us with the possibility of a better journey.

In Indian mythology, Chitragupt is the celestial accountant, tallying every breath and deed. My community claims descent from him, which makes the metaphor personal: perhaps someone up there is counting the days I am entitled to live.

And yet, Monsieur Chitragupt, I crave freedom. You assigned me family and faith without asking, but you let me choose professions, cities, and vocations. Out of those contradictions, I stitched together a life that feels mine authentically.

The greatest gift you embedded in my mental device was not the streak counter, but the trio of buttons: Change, Review, Reset. They remind me that life is not a rigid calendar march but a program I can rewrite.

Calendars and clocks remind me of mortality, yes—but beyond that, I would rather be the programmer of my own existence. If streaks end, so be it. The real streak worth keeping is the one where I choose, again and again, to live deliberately.

  1. so the question I have (love the Comments above, very informative, since being self-hosted I don’t get the ‘support’ and encouragement from WP)…where was I? lol

so wherein ourselves comes the sense of loss/very real feeling of ‘aww damn!’ (when breaking a streak such as I read in your post and the Comments of some of the others)?

    Ah!! Ha!!

the damned Apple again!! (will try not to rant on the Garden of Eden…too much)

perhaps a part of us chooses to believe there is a chance we will not die/are immortal.

A ‘streak’ is an addition to a future resume. Breaking a streak is being forced to strikethrough an otherwise please description of ourselves.

    1. To each their own. Those resumes may lose significance later.

I was happy to be chosen Quora Top Writer in 2018, but Reddit left Quora far behind. Substack is making an attempt to take good writers, but the system is flawed in some ways.

I do not have the energy left to start on a new platform and build followers.

  2. A beautiful perspective, Reena. WordPress counts posts, calendars count days, clocks count hours, and perhaps Chitragupt counts deeds but the heart counts something entirely different. I think there is a quiet wisdom in realizing that not every streak deserves preservation. Sometimes the most meaningful act is pressing “Reset” and choosing your direction anew.
