I don’t even know why we broke up; there was no acrimony or argument. It was as if we just floated away into different realms and did not miss each other.
People grow apart in different spaces, irrelevant to each other; there are no separations as such.
I’m not looking for validation or consolation; I feel so complete and at peace with myself.
The GenX parent quietly beat a retreat. She was sure that her daughter had outgrown the need for a parent, too.

Grown children can be emotionally independent and find their parents to be good friends.

Yes. The parents need to revise their approach too.

the thing about separation is that while it is always difficult, as humans, we all too often add to our own suffering.
The questions of ‘why’ (did they leave/do they not care/etc) is fuel to a fire. A fire that, as part of being human must be allowed to burn until it is extinguished.
Unfortunately the ‘extra’ fuel of trying to know the mind of another always extends the burning… for years or more

You are so right. There are so many people around who judge.

Separating from a spouse is different than separating from a parent.

Heartbreaking twist at the end, Reena! May they find their way back to each other on new terms…

Let us hope so, or let them find meaning in emotional independence.

What a beautifully restrained and reflective piece. I really admire how much emotion you conveyed with such quiet simplicity. The idea that some relationships don’t end with conflict but simply drift apart like tides changing direction feels very real and deeply human.
