He licked his fingers, unfazed by his wife’s consternation.
“This tastes exactly as my mother used to make it.”
“Enjoy the food you like, but don’t let go of manners.” His wife’s coiffured head shook in disgust.
The family recipe was thought to have been lost ages ago.
Suddenly, he froze on seeing a familiar figure behind the lace curtain. She was watching him eat.
“She’s our new cook”, his daughter was helpful. She did not particularly like her mother’s arrogance.
His mother was believed to be dead in an earthquake that shook the village and their lives decades ago.

Now this is intriguing.

There was a Marathi movie where the IAS officer’s wife has thrown out his parents. Later, the mother comes back to work as a cook, but stays out of her son’s sight. He recognises her by the taste of food.
