The door of the trash chute shut with a shriek, but she could hear the thud of the previous year’s calendar made of thick, glossy paper falling on the ground.
It was a year she preferred to erase from memory, but was sure that echoes from the past would disturb the fresh musical notes she planned to create.
“You need to overcome the past, not erase it, the life coach said, “Reach a place where you just toss a memory back from your shoulder rather than dwell on it.”
She turned back and saw only darkness and silence in the long corridor that reached her slightly ajar apartment door, letting out a beam of soft light.
Tomorrow will be another day, just another day that will allow renewal of life and commitment to self-interest.
An unexpected visitor was waiting for her in the living room, with a question mark on the probable future.

If the visitor is part of the past which needs overcoming, I hope s/he gets the boot quickly.

I’d be pretty darned spooked if I came back from emptying the trash and my door was ajar never mind someone inside my apartment. Sure hope it’s someone she knows – even if it is someone from her past, uh, wait… someone good from her past!
Hope there’s a follow up to this, Reena.

Start the Six Sentence New Year with a ‘cliff-hanger’! cool
not for nothin but the past is practice being someone/something that does not…cannot exist… and yet we all have to fit the drag into it rather than stand in the here and now…where the future waits

The fear of being told, “But you said this yesterday. Don’t you stand by your words or acts?”
The perils of expecting continuity ..

Good point from the life coach about overcoming the past, not erasing it.
