Back and Forth

Someone pushed me from the deck,
and the world tilted
air fled my lungs,
the bridge behind me crumbled into dust,
and the ship sailed on
as if I had never stood upon it.

In the hush beneath the surface,
a force gathered itself from currents,
slowly taking form.
On the far bank, it rose

a silhouette I knew before I saw
It is me here, and it was me there,
split only by the river
and the moment I let go.
Now I stand between two tides
one pulling me back
to the person I once carried,
one urging me forward
to the person I am becoming.

Looking back, I see the fall.
Looking forward, I see the rise.
