My father-in-law had a large cupboard filled with trophies and plaques won by him. He would scoff at any suggestion of eliminating outdated stuff. The family has retained it so far, after his death, because the house is locked. I’m not sure if the trophies will survive a renovation or sale of the property.
I learnt from this that a treasured self-image and associated memories matter more than an inanimate object. It is about how it makes you feel.
things
are dear
for what they
remind you of
pain, joy or lost dreams
liberation occurs
with cutting chords – not from things
but damaged associations
retain only what brings happiness
The above picture (though faded) brings me joy, and I’ve kept Chappy’s pics in my office wherever I worked.
Buddha paintings and idols bring a sense of calm, and I have a large painting in the bedroom.

You’re welcome

A beautiful post Reena. Inanimate objects do have meaning. I have kept one of my dad’s shirts, and keep his St Christopher close.
