the soil breathes
parched a little
but devoid of wetness
-So does my dog
as he prances around carefree
kicking his feet
and moving in circles
I like wearing sunglasses
umbrellas are back in drawers
with the clouds
and here comes along
warnings and a red alert
the drawers vibrate with a rumbling sound
in an attempt to regain life
Cyclone Shakti is on the way
can keep people indoors
for a few days.
The sun shines defiantly
-weather predictions binned
I love the uncertainty
of cyclones
and insouciance of October
I pick up an autumn leaf
and start refreshing my wardrobe
for winter

I feel your affection here:
the uncertainty
of cyclones
and insouciance of October

All well. The cyclone changed route and has spared us in Pune.

I don’t know where I got that idea from – which part of India would that be, Reena – I like to visualise where everybody is writing from…

Am I right in thinking you live in South Africa, Reena, in which case October is your Spring/ early Summer – I didn’t know that you had a cyclone season…

I live in India, and a cyclone in this season is unusual. Fortunately, it bypassed the city where I live, after a heavy shower.

The cyclone is yet to arrive 😀. It probably changed course.

No. This is a free picture borrowed from Pexels. Dare I say, my dogs are cuter than this one 🙂

Loved this, Reena. You capture so well the vagaries of October in its changes, its uncertainties and alarms, its impress on our behavior, our attitude becoming at turns, like your dog’s, carefree or insouciant or defiant. The quality of the weather becomes the barometer for the persona’s own mood, a natural communication. Enjoyed this poem very much.

I think maybe dogs are better to remind you of seasons…

Agree. Their senses are much sharper than ours.

I love the way your dog behaves at the prospect of Cyclone Shakti, Reena, a last hurrah before staying indoors, and that the sun shines defiantly. I’m with you, loving the insouciance of October, and I’ve already refreshed my wardrobe!

A highly visual and contemporary poem that combines everyday calm with the unpredictable force of nature. It conveys a sense of change and adaptation, with a touch of serenity in the face of uncertainty.
