Subterranea

Consciousness is awareness; it is also playing by the rules, projecting an acceptable version of yourself and burying everything else underneath. It leads to sophistication, and after a while, we dare not acknowledge our instincts. They are called base instincts because we are expected to rise above those. Humans have to differentiate themselves from animals. We show respect for others’ emotions by submerging our own.

Consciousness is what the brain tells us after the mind has sifted out unacceptable stuff. Culture programs neural pathways. Hence, people from different cultures respond differently to the same stimulus. Why does our stomach churn at certain foods the Chinese enjoy?

Consciousness is being physically alive. The unconscious and subconscious are the spiritual realms that live on and enable existence at a different level. Maybe an artist or philosopher or occult practitioner dives in for inspiration. Most of us are too busy with our conscious lives to acknowledge its existence.

dreams are the aftershocks
not visions, but sediment
a collage of all we fail to name
all we bury beneath the etiquette of daylight.

The subconscious speaks in riddles because the clarity of these truths would burn, revealing the intense and profound nature of our subconscious revelations. The mind remembers what we refuse to know.

masks of metaphor
confrontations in disguise
these are not symbols
truths too raw for daylight

  1. This was wonderful, Reena and it made me think how the conscious mind and the subconscious minds work. The subconscious mind can serve as a profound source of inspiration by connecting disparate ideas and processing information outside of conscious awareness. While the conscious mind focuses on the task at hand, the subconscious sifts through a vast repository of memories, experiences, and observations to generate creative insights.

    1. Thanks for the quick response!

I analyze my dreams at times and find that small bits have come from thoughts that passed my mind throughout the day or week before that. But the tapestry that it creates appears to be weird and unreal.
