He grabs the medical test report
and gives an accurate diagnosis
without reading the name on the envelope
names have faded for him
He can’t recall what he had for breakfast
yells at the attendant
-the doctor’s memory is melting away
core competence remains

A touching poem. Reminds me of loved ones who have endured dementia.

I can feel things leaving my brain that may never return. Watching the slow deterioration of another is heart wrenching and soul searching.

If the things that leave are junk and get replaced by new stuff, it is fine.
Yes, the condition of others can be a life lesson.

I do try to be careful not to be adding more junk in there!

The last two lines describe a man who is disintegrating but still functioning. I’m sorry you lost your father-in-law, Reena.

Unfortunately, many don’t think so.

Reena, this one hit hard. The final line is devastating in its restraint: “core competence remains” carries so much unspoken grief and dignity. I’ve known clinicians whose early dementia went unnoticed at first, and I also work with cognitive challenges myself. Your poem captures the tension between fading memory and retained skill with genuine insight and power. It’s not overdone, it’s an accurate, unflinching and, therefore, shattering summation of what can happen to some of us.

This incident made me think of the core competence that I’d like to carry with me. And it is writing.

Reena, “the doctor’s memory is melting away / core competence remains” hits me hard. That quiet contrast between fading identity and unwavering skill really strikes me.
Much love,
