“Wealth has bred arrogance in her. She has no sympathy for her sick husband.” The patriarchy groaned under the onslaught of verbal attacks.
“In this family, I was always declared guilty. Yet, I retain my right to live the way I like.” She fumed in response.
Her words resonated with those who could reach the cause of her pain. A woman is not born to be cast in moulds and worshipped as a goddess.
Yes, she is guilty … guilty of claiming her power too late and instilling unfair expectations. Power is unacknowledged wealth, and letting it stay dormant is criminal.
To hurt is to steal;
To deprive is dacoity;
To suppress is murder.
And patriarchy commits all these crimes.
“But we let her splurge and indulge …” someone mumbles in a weak response.
Let her?
Isn’t this assuming an authority you don’t possess?

A creative take on patriarchy, Reena. Love it!!

I have always felt alianated with the patriarchy (even though it may seem that I belong to it)… maybe we should join forces.

It is the greatest challenge for women in my country.

I have understood so, on so many levels. It is less so here, but also here we have those clubs of men who try to manage women (and many men too) through bad methods.

Reena, truth rings from your essay. Patriarchy is an ugly business. We’ve been brainwashed by it from birth and it isn’t easy to shake off.

It is so deeply ingrained that practitioners do not realise their acts are criminal. But does that make it less of a crime?
