I read instruction manuals only when I encounter problems operating a device. However, I still find the internet a better place to find solutions since other users have shared similar issues and how they have overcome them.
After quitting the job, I jumped into a Technical Writing course, only to keep myself busy. It was the most boring task I learnt to do (writing instruction manuals), and I did not take any work assignments. I wrote an instruction manual for a CASIO 540 answering machine (an outdated device now) for my final assignment.
On an impulse, I wrote the following poem after reading your prompt.
My house is in the deep woods
where few would care to reach
I’m not listed on Google Maps
In my search for anonymity
and peace.
If you do reach there
Follow the instructions.
knock twice
Once to know if I want to receive you
and a second time
to give me enough leeway
to make up my mind
and walk to the front door.
If the door splits from the wall
and we come face to face
try not to judge
I’m not the same person
that you see on
social media profiles
Check your insulation systems
My rawness is sharp like mustard
and may sting your eyes
Proceed with caution
If you survive the onslaught
of my originality
turn the pages
with dynamic content
and check the Mood of the Day
If you have come this far
you may have the appetite
for candid conversations
If you find
your protective gear
inadequate
Step back slowly
The doors will open
automatically
to let you out
If you look back
You may not see your footprints
The system retains
only complementary
thought processes
Rest under the oak tree
drink from the natural spring
You will take time
to get back
where you came from
in your original form

Beautiful poem, I may knock on your door.

I loved your poem Reena, but I don’t think that I will come knocking on your door in the near future.
