A Rant

India is one of those countries where people may not ask, “How’ve you been?” when they meet after a long gap. But they might exclaim, “Oh, you have put on/lost a lot of weight.”

It is a transgression of personal boundaries, but that is how things are. So often have I been tempted to say, “I will refrain from commenting on your nose or hair because I respect boundary lines.”  I don’t say it because I’m unsure if the message will go across.

Some comedians have made millions from being overweight, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.

Some actors and models live on watermelon and popcorn and wouldn’t risk their fortunes either.

Obesity hits hard when it restricts movement, causes aches and pains or becomes a cause of lifestyle diseases.

If I were left to myself, I’d respect the uniqueness of individuals rather than expect them to fit into pre-sized moulds because designers have manufactured clothes in that size.

  1. Yes, I think it’s more of a politeness and respect issue, which are boundaries the other person has to have. I laughed at your thought about not commenting on their nose or hair. Yes, I do not think that would go over well, or that they would understand. So many are self-absorbed.
