The deathbed feels like such a welcome place, though the medical team around her does not accept it as such. She wants to ask them not to poke all those needles in a body she would soon discard, but the oxygen mask prevents her from speaking.
In retrospect, life has been a series of wondering what the next move should be, and now she feels so certain about being on the final leg of the journey.
It makes all the battles seem worthless; whatever brought her here was a desire to stop fighting and surrender.
A newborn infant wails in the next room, and she thinks, “Welcome to the world, darling. I’ll soon make space for you.”
Nobody sees her smile and peaceful expression as she bids goodbye to the mad frenzy around her.

A relief to her, a grief to the family.

I can imagine this feeling when it all just feels over. Time to move on. Nicely written, Reena!
