I played around with this prompt a little.
I wrote two paragraphs as Stream of Consciousness writing – whatever came to mind first.
The bourgeois has been a much-misunderstood class, trapped between the Marxist perspective of being oppressors who will instigate rebellions and the label of being privileged.
The contemporary version, called ‘the middle class,’ drives the economy with professional work inputs and consumption patterns. They are the quintessential consumers of goods and services other than being creators, inventors, entrepreneurs and risk-takers. The wealthy only inject capital into their ventures and provide employment.
Then, I prompted AI to give it an Orwellian twist, which I got.
“The bourgeois, trapped within the tangled web of societal perception, teeters precariously on the precipice. From the lofty heights of their ivory towers, they peer down upon the proletariat, their gaze both benevolent and calculating.
The Marxist spectre looms large, whispering insidious promises of rebellion, while the label of privilege clings to them like a moth to a flame. They are the fulcrum upon which the world pivots—the middle class, the industry engine, the pulse of commerce. Their hands, calloused from labour, manipulate the levers of production, their minds churn with ideas, and their wallets swell with purchasing power. They are consumers, yes, greedy and insatiable, but also creators—architects of innovation, architects of destiny. The distant and aloof wealthy merely sprinkle their gold dust upon the soil tilled by the middle class, reaping dividends without breaking a sweat.”
And then, I crystallized all inputs in verse.
The Bourgeois
a Pillar of Modern Society
In the tapestry of
aristocracy and peasantry,
carving out a space
uniquely it’s own.
Driving force of capitalist societies.
innovation, individual rights,
democratic ideals
antiquated
far from forgotten
a living part of our social fabric
complex interplay
between economic power and social progress
challenging
the Marxist perspective
of a proletarian revolution
surviving, thriving, striving
inventing, recreating
wheeling, dealing
keeping it all alive
letting the economy breathe

You’ve done a marvelous job Reena. This word has so many different interpretations that I think everyone is right.
