The Plight of Starlight

It was a day not so bright
When she found her inner light
She gathered the courage to say
This is not what makes my day

impervious eyebrows raised in alarm
her audacity left them less than warm
“Holy fish!” fear gripped their insides
independent thoughts cause landslides

She spoke and wrote, words rained away
Their self-righteousness drained away
“What is it that you want? We gave you the best”
“Stop making demands, and I’ll do the rest.”

Manacled by expectations, she could not deliver
to her commandments – that made them shiver
“Will you talk about us, our deeds not so clean?”
“As long as they affect me, or dull my sheen.”

amongst the stars, she shines bright
shunned by days, banished to nights
from a decimated body, departed her soul
I stay awake to read stories in starlight
