Lorraine finally moves to the old age home she has resisted all along.
“Happy to see you, but may I ask what caused the change of mind?”
“I achieved a lot in life, by laying bricks in even, predetermined patterns with no scope for error. I earned rewards.
I cannot relate to the millennial culture of going with the flow.”
“Can you elaborate?”
“My daughter married thrice, changed five jobs and thinks she’s right. She says she does what she believes in and holds no one else responsible for her life.”
“Those are her bricks laid in a different pattern.”

How true. Everyone’s pattern of bricks is different.

What every parent must learn, in every generation. Our children are not us. We are not our children.

well, as kahlil gibran said in his poem, on children, “you may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts… for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.”

Perfectly said. Unreasonable expectations create conflicts.

I like the fact that Lorraine doesn’t seem to be judging her daughter but merely sees a different way of life.

What a fun take on the prompt. Indeed we all lay the bricks of life our own way. Well done, Reena.

Interesting analogy. Are those younger structures on weaker foundations, or are they better able to bend and change with the changing world around us? Only time will tell.

The generational divide, and when they are older, they may come round to the older point of view.

I wonder if the younger generation are on shaky foundations if they do not set their bricks by conventional rules. Your story raises those fundsmental question for me. Thank you.
