Infatuation

There’s an unprecedented chill in the air, and the ground beneath his feet is unusually cold.

“Why are you roaming barefoot in this weather, young lad?”

The old man’s voice breaks his reverie.

The whiff of perfume,  swish of a silk scarf, charm of a smile and beauty of a face is firmly in the past. He just bid goodbye to a person he did not know. And she will never know the impact she made on a nubile mind.

The train has left the station. He needs to gather broken parts of his imagination, go home and restart life.

  1. Reading this fiction piece really hit me emotionally as a writer. It’s a poignant reminder that sometimes we cross paths with people who leave a lasting impact on us, even if they never knew we existed. The imagery of the cold weather and the old man’s voice breaking the protagonist’s reverie really sets the mood of loneliness and longing. The reference to the train leaving the station and the protagonist needing to gather the broken parts of his imagination before going home and starting anew really spoke to me as well. It’s a beautiful and bittersweet reminder that life goes on, even after we say goodbye to those we love.

    1. I know a guy who travelled from a remote town to the financial capital of India, claiming that she did respond to his feelings for her. The story was that she borrowed a magazine from him somewhere, fell asleep while reading it and unknowingly left lipstick marks on it.

He had to be sent back with some force and some persuasion, as the girl came from a wealthy background, and her family could have harmed this starry-eyed rustic lad.
