Storm

It is a night unlike another. Tomorrow could see him taking off for greener pastures or pulled back in the same cesspool. The appointment letter is in hand, but his family is not happy about his emigration to another country.

The skies are dark gray and laden with clouds. A storm is expected to hit the shores anytime.

He can see the lights on in certain windows. Maybe they wish to taste the storm.

Like many others, he goes to bed hoping the storm passes over. The next week might see him on another shore, safely delivered by the storm.

  1. There’s a lot of uncertainty in this. He ‘could’ be in a better place, but the family disapproval and the gathering storm lends a feeling that he won’t be able to make the break – or maybe he will. I like that uncertainty in this story. Very convincing and moving.

  2. I immediately thought of the poor people who are paying extortionate sums to be put in a tiny dinghy and sent across one of the worlds most busy shipping channels. With a high chance of dying, the people taking the money uncaring. Good take but I may have read it the wrong way.

    1. Whatever you say is an undeniable part of reality, applicable more to semi-skilled labour. I’ve seen people give up good offers to take care of a family. Migration laws or cost considerations or something else may not permit the entire clan to move together.
