“Taste,” said my grandma, “is a function of all that you put in the pan, how and when.”
I followed her advice religiously, while cooking meals for a husband who did not love me.
Very few words were exchanged between us. We lived in different worlds with different priorities, and blamed each other for not falling in line.
I know Covid has struck as everything seems so tasteless. The disease does not seem daunting. Maybe, I succumb … fly out of the pan at the right time. Each of us will find a new level of existence – not tasteless, just different.

At one point all this becomes a habit, then it is hard to escape. Excellent take, Reena.

Love the secret ingredient. And generosity is definitely a flavour, my neighbour often shares something she made with me, the kindness and generosity are a magic ingredient. 🙏

I think it is amazing how many different ways we interpret these prompts. And your writing is so thoughtful and provocative. Lovely.

That is so sad. Is that her only way out? The thought of not being loved…it is not a good feeling at all.

You are right. Not being loved is not a good feeling.

I really like where you took this. At the end of the read, I said to myself, “Oh. I love this.”

Great metaphor, Reena. You’ve included a huge amount from cooking to marriage to religion. Just about all the important things in life!

How very sad to be stuck in a tasteless marriage. After that, I don’t think a lack of taste of foods would indeed be nearly as bad. … Nicely penned!

So much in those 100 words! I read the ingredients in the pan as a metaphor for what you add to your life results in how it tastes (feels). Loved this!

Having enjoyed 51 years of a really good marriage, my heart hurts for those who are stuck in such a dead relationship. Very well portrayed.

Hopefully not out of the pan and into the fire. Sometimes it’s best to accept and carry on as best one can.
