“Crowded streets in Covid times are scary…..”
“It’s not a fraction of what it used to be on this day.”
“This day?”
“Yes. Today is Gokulashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna. Traditionally, people tie up yoghurt and sweets in a pot and hang it very high. There is an art of science of getting up there to break the pot.”
“Ohh!” Mary was new to Indian culture, but deeply interested, “Maybe I’ll get to see it next year.”
They smiled in unison, hoping for better times. Gopal was wiping a tear. He used to be the champion breaking the pot.

This was really interesting – thank you for this insight I hope Gopal manages to reach the pot the following year.

A lovely reminder of all the traditions and festivals we are giving up this year.
We had our company’s 100th this year and special celebrations were planned – now cancelled.

I’m learning from the stories this week! Good take on this prompt, an interesting piece of Indian culture.

Excellent story that certainly makes the point very well, Reena.
Since I’ve never been a large crowds person, such celebrations went on without me. But such a loss for economies and fun seekers.

There are many people who just watch, but the event needs to happen somewhere. And of course, there are many who make money from public celebrations.

Yes. One called SXSW in Austin TX was cancelled last Spring and that put some small businesses under. Hard times.

There is a vaccine now, which is yet to prove its efficacy. So, who knows? 🙂

Ah, there will be better times, though when we do not know, and being human, waiting can feel interminable …

Uncertainty kills more than the waiting period.
