I’m a lone warrior
but there’s no enemy
on the battlefield
critical voices
put-me-downs
Hmmm..s and frowns
I heard from childhood
are the dragons
I fight
every day, every hour
life on the defensive
while attackers fled
ages ago
leaving scars on my psyche
Dragons

The scar remains there forever. beautifully written.

Love the way you describe the dragon as that inner demon

The criticism we internalize is so insidious, haunting us years later. May you lay those dragons to rest.

You’re right about certain thoughts being like dragons.

Those are as violent and as dreadful.

They may be gone, but they were dragons no less.
