Thank you, Denise! Sacrifice itself is a controversial term. If a mother does it to protect her child, she feels compelled to do it inwardly – no other option exists at that moment. There are other versions where people do something happily, are disappointed later when the reciprocity is not there, and then start ‘cribbing’ about the sacrifices they made. If you do it at gunpoint, it is oppression, not sacrifice.

What Clark said about self-sacrifice. Some folks just don’t appreciate it to begin with and some learn not to. Ugh. Great sxi, good use of the cue.

sometimes self-sacrifice is over-rated (at least the way that the dominant culture would have it’s less powerful members be indoctrinated in the principle).

IMO, it is always overrated. But in this scenario, if the third person is their son or daughter, or a parent … the way you read it will change. We tend to imagine triangular relationships.
