Genius or Idiot?

The meek shall inherit the Earth. It was meant to encourage certain personality traits. In my view, the average will, because going by the Law of Averages, they balance out extremes.

The concept of ‘likeability’ actually boils down to being similar to others. Extremes of any kind, or even the different  ones are quickly rejected, leading to isolation. Genius or inanity or insanity could be just different perspectives of the world, but we appreciate only the widely accepted one. All of us create our own reality with our thoughts. But, we expect people to fit in the existing structures of thought, research or socio-political mores.

There is a controversial theory of multiple intelligences – Visual, kinaesthetic, musical, linguistic, logical, intrapersonal, interpersonal and naturalistic. It has recently been challenged as an appropriate tool to be used in training. The idea is to align people to get the results which the organization needs, irrespective of their individual strengths. You get the drift?

The popular cartoon shows people with different abilities being measured by the same yardstick.

IMHO, the ultimate yardstick should be one’s positive contribution to the world around. If I can add value to somebody else’s life – be it a human or animal, my existence on earth is justified. Genius be damned!

  1. I like your concluding statement Reena, I think most of us would be happy achieving that goal. Of course, I feel I have to ponder the question, what sort of intelligence does one need to discuss idiocy? Thanks as always for sharing your insights on the tale weaver.

    1. We will first need to define the parameters of idiocy? I’ve delberately refrained from using the word. Why do you think words like ‘differently abled’ ‘visually challenged’ and ‘less privileged’ have sprung up in the last decade. The yardstick is seen as a continuum without sharp divisions.
