The old man smiled at his favorite son, in half-conscious state, mind de-capacitated by dementia.
He looked at his late wife’s picture and said, “She did a good job of raising the children. They are my ‘diamonds’.”
He died a few hours later, without knowing that the tenderness he saw was merely the professional bedside manner of his doctor son.
The money from his account had been transferred to the son’s account over a period of time, and the family jewels were missing from the cupboard.
The well-bred sons were poised for a battle of distrust and suspicion over diamonds.

What matters is he died peacefully. Sibling fighting for wealth is nothing new. Written beautifully. A Wow! for that.

What an awful situation! Siblings fighting over money and things they think are rightly theirs have torn families apart. Greed is a horrible trait.

Awful, but it happens so often….

“mind de-capacitated by dementia” I like that description as it is so close to “decapitated” which it seems is what happens to one’s memory. Such an awful, awful condition.
Greed in any one is despicable but when it is a child or children stealing from their parents it’s even worse. Tragic and sad. What goes around comes around as the saying goes.
