Elaine was refusing an offer to set up an offshore branch of a large business firm. She was brilliant and well-qualified, but broken by vicissitudes of life.
“Plants do grow in saline environments. They need more adaptation. Do you see this unusual seashore palm? It has no visible trunk, just foliage. It has overcome the limitations of an inhospitable terrain.”
He thought he saw a flicker of hope in those deep blue eyes.
