sadness between sips
the mirror never lies
my bee-stung lips
looking thinner
I pour another drink
to feel mature and wise
I find validation
in the features
losing definition
on my mother’s
once-beautiful face
it has lessons to teach us
age and genetics
spare no one
A good cosmetologist
might be the friend
who, in approaching winter
brings back the sun

Very striking poetry Reena..loved your imageries👍👏

A good cosmetologist might be a temporary friend but inner beauty is a permanent friend. I like how you wove this piece.

I love the way you describe the sadness in your mirror image as:
‘my bee-stung lips
looking thinner’;
sadness and age do that to us.
I too found it hard to accept the loss of ‘definition on my mother’s once-beautiful face’. Her beauty was gradually destroyed by dementia, bit by bit. It’s not so much age but genetics I fear. I try to keep myself presentable with a few cosmetics – I love the metaphor ‘in approaching winter / brings back the sun’.

Yes. We have access to more resources than the previous generation did.
