He wasn’t quite positive he was sane, but it was a working hypothesis. Insanity, after all, would be an inconvenience which he didn’t need at the moment. It wasn’t like he talked to himself or anything. He talked to the imaginary people around him, but that was just a hazard of the trade. Who was he to argue? They were friends and one naturally spoke to friends.

Flipping in long grass,
skipping, leap-frogging, cartwheeling over stiles,
feet so fleet it feels like flying,
flopping to sit cross-legged on fragrant nature’s floor.
Grass stained shorts. Grubby fingernails
cut careful slits through slim daisy stems.
Threading, making chains to dangle from supple neck.
Carefree sunshine and family love.

Once, this was me.

Breasts swelling, bursting
from a shock-horror bra, hips curving,
and worse, a monthly sticky thing that hurts,
which Grandma calls the curse.
Father stealing small licks to assuage the tip
of his hunger.
Mother loving, supporting
this poor little changeling.

Feeling dirty. filthy images of hot flesh slapping,
moist organs fitting,
slipping wetly…

Weekend Writing Prompt #56 – Erosion

pensitivity101's avatarpensitivity101

Thanks Sammi.……. this week’s prompt opens up a lot of possibilities!

The irregular edges of a stone on the beach add depth and interesting angles, but in time, erosion takes its toll and all that is left is a smooth shiny surface.
It may even reflect what is around it, but that is a borrowed image, not its own.
To an observer, it may appeal for its simplistic shape, but it is, at the end of the day, just a stone.
This heart is made of stone.
Once filled with love and promise,
It needed nurturing
Not sacrificed on the altar of greed,
Oppression and servitude.
The ragged edges could be smoothed,
Enhancing the depth of a love returned.
Tyranny eroded the heart,
And with it the Soul.
All that is left is
A cold memory.

She was beautiful in so many ways. Nature had blessed her with striking physical beauty, the sort you couldn’t help but stare at. But she wasn’t a hollow beauty she contained an inner beauty that captivated me far more than her external appearance.

Once her eyes transfixed on you there was no way out. She held you and you awaited the next move from her that might send you into raptures of delight or writhe in her derision.

But she was playful. She saw the funny side of things and she wanted you to enjoy what she enjoyed.

She was very aware of her physical beauty, her face like that of an Egyptian Goddess could be deceiving and she liked to be photographed in that style but underneath lay a woman who wanted so much to enjoy life.

Being a real person was important to her, she’d reach out and…

I have seen you

in every shade

with

or

without mask

raring to bust

sometimes

like a volcano

then

to maintain peace

seen you

simmer down

I know

you all

’cause

I’m one of you

10-line Poem Challenge #31: Sonnetina Due

Abigail Gronway's avatarDark Side of the Moon

Welcome to week 4 in our study of sonnetinas, or “little songs.” We are counting down from the Sonnetina Cinque, Sonnetina Quattro, and Sonnetina Tre. All of these forms have quite a bit of flexibility within the general framework, and you will find that the Sonnetina Due is no different in that regard.

The Sonnetina Due is a bit mysterious to me, for I’ve found some conflicting information regarding this form. All sources agree that the Sonnetina Due is formed from five couplets, but the conflict comes with the rhyme scheme. Some say it has a rhyme scheme of aabbccddee, while other sources say that rhyming is optional, and that any couplet form may be used. For the sake of my tutorial, I am going to side with those who allow any form of couplet, and that your choices for rhyme are either the rhyme scheme above…

For this challenge, I am reblogging one of my earliest posts 4 years ago…

“Then you should say what you mean,” the March Hare went on.
“I do,” Alice hastily replied; “at least–at least I mean what I say–that’s the same thing, you know.”
“Not the same thing a bit!” said the Hatter. “You might just as well say that “I see what I eat” is the same thing as “I eat what I see”!”
― Lewis Carroll

How about a coven of writers brewing our stories? I don’t mean we’re witches, meeting on a full moon, each one adding some herbs or spices in a big pot of the cauldron, cooking over an open fire. I was just thinking about this course – with all of us coming from different countries, backgrounds, experience, culture, and each one have a story brewing in our minds, waiting in anticipation to come…
