What Becomes of the Brokenhearted – Challenge #197

newepicauthor's avatarMindlovemisery's Menagerie

In 1966, ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’ was written for the Detroit Spinners, but Jimmy Ruffin who was the older brother of Temptations lead singer David Ruffin persuaded the writers (William Henry Weatherspoon, Paul Riser & James Anthony Dean) to let him record it.  At the time they were all hustling for material, so Jimmy walked up to the guy who wrote the lyrics, James Dean, while he was singing the rhythm track alongside the producer William Weatherspoon.  Jimmy was told that the song was intended for The Spinners, but he told them that he thought he could do a better job with the recording.  They let him try and they liked the way he sang it, so about two weeks later they finished recording it and getting the strings put on it.  This song is filled with heartache and misery, as Jimmy Ruffin’s love has departed, he is alone, in pain…

Wilted chaos

Björn Rudberg (brudberg)'s avatarBjörn Rudbergs writings

In the bottom drawer
of his desk he keeps
his pieces, parts,,
and scribbled shorthand
notes and fragments,
pebble-thoughts and pearls

They are clamped together
with infernal shopping lists
for celebratory dinners
once eaten by his desk
in solitude;

There are IOU’s
from friends who passed,
receipts for paper,
ink and screws, his will
and the paper of divorce
he never signed;

there are quotes he wrote
himself and aphorisms,
a sonnet for a visitor
with whom he parted ways,
passport photos, tickets, briefs

In the bottom drawer
of his desk he keeps
his wilted chaos under lock and key,
while on the shelves beyond
(his library, his life)
perfection rules.

Wilted flower, my own picture

Today I host Open Link Live at dVerse which starts at 9 PM CET. I will read my new librarian poem.

Santa’s Wishlist

Santa’s wishlist ….. by Sadje

Sadje/ Sadie's avatarKeep it alive

Seems strange, yes it does
That one who brings presents
To people all over the world
Would require a present for himself

But a bit of reciprocation won’t go amiss
Perhaps, he too would want to be rewarded
For being thoughtful and kind to everyone
It will also gladden his big heart to be remembered

But! You ask what could Santa possibly want?
Someone who has everything, what would he desire
Think deeply and the answer is self-evident
Can you guess or do I spell it out?

Santa would love to receive the gift of love
Not for himself but the love we bestow on each other
He would be absolutely chuffed if he could see
That people really, truly love each other
Irrespective of their religion, race color, or culture

And this my dear would be the best gift we can give
To ourselves too!

Disguises

memadtwo's avatarK.

My mother loved to wear loud colors, especially red. Her laugh could be heard above the din of any crowded room.

Not me.  I dress mostly in black, try to fade unnoticed into the background of other peoples’ lives.  I avoid parties.

But my eyes crave color, my hands long to manipulate texture and shape, to form visual ideas that enhance and delight.  I have a hidden closet full of rainbows—painted, embroidered, knitted, woven into intricate arrangements.

All those vivid narratives remain unworn by my own days, the ones I dress in, their stories patterned and purple.

As night surrounds me, only then do I take them out to display, to embellish my own possibilities.  I close my eyes and enter a parallel world, one in which I cover myself with a thousand glittering mirrors, quilted with moonlight, seams stitched with prismatic stars.

I Wish I Was Santa

I wish I was Santa …. by Jim Adams

newepicauthor's avatarA Unique Title For Me

Any guy who has the address of every naughty girl in town, doesn’t really need anything more, but Santa does deserve some type of present, although I have no idea what he wants.  I guess he wants all the boys and girls to be good, so he can give out more toys, which will keep the elves busy.  When the elves get time off, they are always thinking up new ways to get into mischief, which causes all types of trouble for Santa.  Santa is always happy when Mrs. Claus is baking cookies, as that gives him time to visit some of those really naughty girls.

Written for Reena’s Xploration Challenge #211, where today she would like to know, “What would Santa want for Christmas in 2021?”

On Entering a Tunnel

On entering a tunnel….by Jasmine Bhatia

Jasmine Bhatia's avatarOPTIMISM

A long, narrow and scary passage to pass through,

Entering the tunnel was like Entering a place filled with full of darkness,

Not knowing where and how would the journey be,

But stepping in it was mandatory to grow further,

The beginning of a new venture in life,

The Journey of Taking yourself to the next level,

Always looks risky and filled with challenges,

But if not taken it would throw me to a place where I never want to go,

Time and Situation sometimes demands to take a bold step,

Where Courage needs to be chosen over Fear,

To take little small steps of HOPE,

I then gathered the dose of self belief in me ,

That the darkness of bad and tough times will end soon,

And entered the tunnel slowly by listening to my inner voice,

With fingers crossed I kept on moving further,

Which took me…

Accept and acknowledge

Outstanding work by Aishwarya…

kittysverses's avatarKitty's Verses

Shy away from,

Your inner demons,

If you must,

But, acknowledge them once in a while,

They are a part of you as you are of them,

Fight,

Your inner demons,

If you must,

But make peace with them,

It’s upto you to choose how to be and how not to be,

Disown,

Your inner demons,

If you must,

But, hear them out,

They’d tell you why they are ,the way they are,

Discard,

Your inner demons,

If you must,

But, learn from them,

Before they are shown the door.

Idea behind the poem :-All of us have our share of vices and virtues. To grow, we must acknowledge, accept, deal and learn from our vices as much as we are basking in the glory of our virtues.

Tunnel Visions

Tunnel visions …… by Artie & Stu

artiecamenzind's avatarArtie & Stu

This was no ordinary tunnel. There were warning signs of course as you approached, rather indicators giving pause. “Biggest best tunnel ever.” “You can’t resist.” “Only right-minded people here.” “Better than the good old-fashioned days.” But nothing could quite prepare anyone to go around, skip on past, to do anything but drive towards the next sign. By then though, it was too late for most as the pull of the tunnel sucked them in. At this point they nearly fully just obediently looked towards the others heading to the tunnel, and steered onward into the shaft; convincing themselves of their own free will the entire while. Then an almost magical thing happened, upon entering a tunnel such as this they become no longer aware of the tunnel. They decide that the tunnel is everything and any one and anything outside must be nothing. You could call it, even, magical-thinking maybe…
