Tuesday Poetics: : Literary Alchemy with Laurie Lee

Laura Bloomsbury challenges us to match styles with Laurie Lee…

Laura Bloomsbury's avatardVerse

I’m a sucker for synchronicity and having chosen to focus on this particular poet, a timely connection with his birthdate (26.6.1914) and today’s Poetics challenge became apparent.

As with most of my favourite naturalist poets, Laurie Lee employed description with the light touch of lyricism, devoid of complex structures or the aggrandisement of the Romantics. In fact in answer to his critic Roy Fuller, his riposte was: ‘You dare me to be more complicated, but I dare to achieve simplicity’.

And he succeeds too – take for example his Christmas Landscape:
“There is hunger in the mouth
Of vole and badger,
Silver agonies of breath
In the nostril of the fox,
Ice on the rabbit’s paw”

True, Lee was a Neo-Romantic willing at times to sacrifice meaning for the mellifluous (though not to the extent that Dylan Thomas does). After all, he was musician too and hence…

Horrors of the night

Inspiring prose “Darkness came, full of moths and beetles. I was oppressed by the velvety emptiness of the word and swathes of soft grass. Then the fumes of the night put me to sleep” (As I walked out one Midsummer morning) Poem claustrophobic darkness not-s0-romantic a night prickly, sick dreams make me long for light … Continue reading Horrors of the night

Crossover

This is not an original. I'm sharing a beautiful piece by Rob Brezsny here in response to https://reinventionsreena.wordpress.com/2019/06/20/reenas-exploration-challenge-92/ Maybe you rarely celebrate the fact that you can think, but according to my inside sources, the flash of mercurial codes through your brain is among the universe's most dazzling accomplishments. Try to imagine the colossal divine … Continue reading Crossover

Know the rules

I felt the sand slipping beneath my feet, and soon I was sinking down below. I’d been caught in quicksand. My classmates formed a human chain to pull me out, and succeeded in about seven minutes. We were on a zoology excursion to the Alibag beach. The wonders of nature that we had fished out … Continue reading Know the rules

VIRAL

A semi-conscious state does wonders. Just before I lost consciousness, I heard gems uttered by the doc– “This is the 44th surgery this month. Needless to say, it was not needed. But I’m richer by a few millions.” They didn’t know I’m a social media marketer. The story went viral. (278 characters) https://thedarknetizen.wordpress.com/2019/06/25/twittering-tale-transplant/

rec-92

When the moment of crossover occurred, it came as a bit of a shock.

He expected the lights of the palliative care ward to fade into darkness and all cognizance of life disappear. He would become nothing as he believed there was nothing to go to.

So as the lights around him faded and he slipped away from human life, it came as a surprise when another light took its place.

His first thought was its just happening in my head, my brain is trying to stay in the world and fooling me into thinking I am still there.

Then he realized he didn’t have a brain as such so wondered what it was that was happening to him.

It wasn’t as if he wanted to live forever nor did he have any definite quarrel with death, after all in his final months, life had been crap, confined to a…
