I remember living in a town that had several major hospitals and business – open 24 hours. Because of that markets had to be open to accomadate those who got off in the mornings or at odd night hours.
Some cities can be very haunting… even when you know the area.

Medical stores were just one part of essential services. It has expanded to food, transport and many other things. ATMs provide relief to bank staff.
