I will remember

I remember how expressions changed when
I expressed an opinion
-non-aligned
-unconventional

I remember how they squirmed when
reminded of their irrelevance
-non-contribution
-unfairness

I remember how doors were slammed shut
before I knew
I couldn’t squeeze in my irregular shape
and the size of my IQ
into preconceived boxes
they treasured and preserved for decades
-boxes with magic mirrors
that made them look good
but switched roles
if a rebel entered

Yet, I wonder if that is my role
my relevance
to throw stones in still waters
create ripples in stagnating pools
challenge their supremacy
create enmity for lifetimes

I needed this to give a purpose to my soul
To destroy injustice
To lose myself in battles
and be reborn again and again
with a vow
to create a more fair world

Yes, more … a wee bit more perfect
than imperfection
a little more just
than injustice
a little more feminist
than Patriarchy
I will fight on…
The battle will continue.

My inspiration were the lines by James Baldwin

“The place in which I’ll fit
Will not exist
Until I make it.”

  1. When I was younger – I was tested and had the opportunity (I didn’t find out until much later) to go to a better school. Instead a great injustice was carried out and my education limited. But I persisted even when those close said ‘college’ wasn’t in my future – It was and I paid for it (for a two year program).

I will join you to fight for justice. I will join you to fight for peace – If my written words can carry just a few choice lessons – so be it. I have succeeded.
