The audience was spellbound by the derisive smile and smouldering eyes, as the screens on both sides of the stage magnified his menacing expression.
He was not an actor, but a politician in the throes of election fever. He aspired to break thespians’ records with his histrionics and ring voting machines.
He was disappointed to see amusement in the crowd, rather than allegiance to a cause. Perhaps, they underestimated his resolve to change the world.
βItβs a vow, not a Wow,β his voice thundered through the auditorium, sending a chill through spines and reminding them that this was not entertainment.

Why does the Disney song, “Never Smile at a Crocodile,” come to mind?

Your piece reminds me of the “Snake Oil” salesmen or the preachers who used ‘fire and brimstone’ to condem even the most innocent of those in the crowd to believe that they had to give more of themselves to something/ someone else in order to be ‘saved’.

You are right.
The genuine ones get lost in the crowd. Like we are where we are because of freedom-fighters and early age feminists, but politicians take credit with whatever crumbs are thrown at us to garner votes.

Charm only gets a person/politician so far, but often that charm exceeds its useful or beneficial limits. And then it’s too late!

I’m watching the election results of local municipal bodies and how people react after victory or loss. π

surely modern politics are updated bread and circuses except the audience is both victim and perpetrator
that said, it bears to keep in mind, the biggest (and most destructive) lies are the ones we tell outselves
