I learnt to decipher what’s happening in my body with the help of emotional intelligence. I’m not sure if I’ve learnt to manage those, as I sink deeper into an emotional abyss every day. Anger and pain dominate.
No one needs me in the sunset years of life. We have set up household gadgets to manage a large part of the chores. Artificial intelligence has taken away most of my consultancy assignments.
Perhaps this is what remains of being human: to feel without function, to ache without agenda. My labour now is to carry the weight of what cannot be automated. But I refuse to let this happen. There are underprivileged segments of the population that need me.

I rather hope this is fictional rather than autobiographical, but if so you have well understood that state of mind. The haiku is superb, both in its own right and as a commentary on the prose section.

Yes. It is fictional, but it may be true for so many. Thanks for the close engagement, Rosemary!

FInding that way forward will be a challenge, when they realize all that is lost when everyone leaves.

It is often too late. Life and death are battles against the right time.

Beautiful post. After I left teaching, not being able to go back after losing my son, I have a hole in my life that I can’t seem to keep full. It is sad to think of what little impact I hold today.

You do hold impact, with your writing.

Thank you for saying so, but it doesn’t necessarily feel like it. But then again, not all contributions are visible!

A lovely Haiku, and as we get older, we share our wisdom and free childcare.

I hope we have takers left for wisdom. Childcare and pet care will be needed.

As we just said, you never know the inner workings of a person. You strike me as someone who’s calm, cool, and collected. This is not to say you are not, but I would not realize the “anger and pain” if you did not tell me. You weave your haibun masterfully. The haiku is a perfect compliment.
This weekend at breakfast, the server brought our food out to us on a robotic cart.😳 It was weird and completely unnecessary. Do it the good old-fashioned way and carry a tray.
