Mediums

“The increase in divorce rates is scary”, sighed my mother.

“I work in HR, Mom, and the attrition rates are scarier than that.”

“Why can’t young people commit themselves?”

“Their values are different. The medium that connects is fluid, and expectations keep changing.”

“We were taught there are no options to go back. It made us stick together for life, but it does get claustrophobic.”

She looks embarrassed and quickly changes the topic, worrying that she has revealed too much.

I wipe a tear and move away. Perhaps I chose to stay single, watching the toxicity of my parents’ relationship.

  1. It is not just about having no choice, limited options or societal pressures, it is also about conditioning and arranged marriages rarely gave love much importance. Perhaps the future generations are veering to the other extreme.

I love this, Reena. Sometimes we make choices based on second-hand experiences.

  2. Relationships are like electric items these days, they break before they reach their warranties. It’s a shame that love never seems to last these days. It can be so beautiful, I love the way you conveyed this and the last indicating daughter was following her parents love story. Well done.
