The gainers call it networking; losers unfairly describe it as conspiracy.

ah! the power of social dynamics… how many of us have witnessed the thoroughly charming rise to the top without any competency whatsoever… the establishment will refer to them as good at managing people and resources. inevitable product of the social nature of man but is it good? depends on who you ask…
