Yet, I live

I look back
and wonder sometimes
what brought me here
despite me
my brashness
my rebellious instincts
that alienated
more than attracted
centres of power

I look at the lines
on my ageing palm
darker and deeper
and find solace
in a small part of me
that I still hold
in my firm grip

despite
unfulfilled ambitions
forgotten dreams
unrealistic thoughts
a world I imagined
but never owned

yet I exist
and there cannot
be a greater truth
than the life
I lived
and all that is
yet to come

Poetics – Despite and Still

  1. A moving poetic reflection which struck me as being very much in the vein of “invictus” but in your own resounding voice, Reena. And finally if we were to be true to ourselves, we couldn’t have been if we are not able to look back and say,

    “there cannot
    be a greater truth
    than the life
    I lived.”

    Beautifully written.
