Philosophy and Discipline

A visionary had two children – Philosophy and Discipline.

He entrusted Philosophy with researching evolutionary concepts and finding the best way to forge ahead. Rejecting old notions was okay to ensure forward movement.

He asked Discipline to create actionable goals for people to support his sister’s wisdom and monitor their progress.

While Philosophy remained shut in libraries, Discipline developed immense power in the outside world. He was seen as the authority to write and impose rules and punish those who refused to fall in line.

Meanwhile, the visionary passed away.

Discipline was not happy that his sister could revise the rules he implemented so passionately. He locked her up in a library that very few cared to visit.

His empire grew enormously.

Meanwhile, competitors had sprung up who copied his power acquisition model with different sets of rules.

He grew even busier defending his own territory. He allocated targets to team members to enrol followers and incentivised them.

He appointed priests to induce guilt in people for not following the code of conduct, and painting horrific visions of the future that detractors face.

Visibility matters; and more so in battles for control.

Philosophy carried true wisdom but remained in oblivion. She did not marry for a compatible partner and had no biological progeny. Her followers who read and understood her principles are a vanishing species.

The world is doomed to follow the rules of power-seekers as authentic  wisdom loses itself in captivity/

  1. Could we perhaps write another similar story by replacing the word “philosophy” with “thought” and “discipline” with religion”?
What impact that may bring in our understanding?

  2. Nice story, Reena as it reminded me of a parable where a lesson can be learned.  Discipline is part of the military mindset and that is what allows one army to be superior over another, while philosophy is supposed to develop a coherent and comprehensive theory of everything.
