It feels like an achievement today.
Struck by insomnia, I’ve been staring at the night sky for ages. My unanswered questions keep bouncing back; not even a shade alters – as dead as the birthday blessings I received in childhood, holding visions of a bright future.
I’m hearing this song for the first time: “Count the stars … for they are finite … like the blessings …in yours and my life.” The composer is unknown, but the words poured on my consciousness like raindrops on parched earth.
What does it matter that the stars we see are already dead? They reflect a light that can set the imagination on fire.
I counted stars to the left of the moon, stretching from my window to the building in the corner. A few of those blessings make me feel alive.
It feels like an achievement today.

Being able to open our eyes in the morning, it’s an achievement in and of itself!

Indeed, what does it matter if what counts is what it is doing to us.

Like Kim, I’m appreciative of your opening and closing this contemplative story with the same line, a circularity that reinforces its positive note. I love how you wove the prompt line into persona’s thoughts to conclude, “They reflect a light that can set the imagination on fire.” We are spurred on by such blessings that make us “feel alive.” Beautifully written. Much enjoyed, Reena.

Starting and ending with ‘it feels like an achievement today’ is like wrapping up it all up. Being familiar with insomnia, I know how it can be as positive as it is negative. Many of my poems come to me in the early hours of the morning. Insomniacs are stargazers. I love the simile, ‘words poured on my consciousness like raindrops on parched earth’.
