The young lad looks around
fascinated by the tallness of buildings;
intimidated by the slickness of motion
Adventure beckons;
he is unsure of landing spaces
but eager to craft stories
he will tell his brethren
back home in the village
crouched in a corner
smaller than the space
reserved for cattle at home
his dreams begin to crumble
but who knows
a mansion or skyscraper
may engage him
as a helper?
riding elevators to work
interacting with people
who look like the actors
on his tiny screen;
gaining goodwill
by hard work;
consuming success stories
to fire enthusiasm
he continues to plod along
on tiled sidewalks
to meet his dreams

I see this young lad trying to find his way.
“crouched in a corner
smaller than the space
reserved for cattle at home” I actually know what that must feel like!!

I do remember how much more I dreamt about cities as a child, but it’s hard to find your own goal/gold…

The major issue is a new entrant can’t trust anyone. They’ll be taken for a ride.

‘The city of dreams’ comes alive in your words, Reena! You have conveyed the aspirations of migrants so well.

Something about a city you’re always looking up at the tall buildings. Lovely poem.

Thank you! I recall a sentence from Ayn Rand’s Fountainhead where the protagonist wants to cover the skyline of buildings with her body, as it is the result of human brilliance.

As a child – and as a teenager – I too was ‘fascinated by the tallness of buildings; / intimidated by the slickness of motion’, but now they make me shudder. Everything looks exciting at first, but city life soon wears you down. You’ve captured that in your poem, Reena.
