Aria

I will take off from the point I ended my last piece on cats.

I said, FM wanted to be with me. FM is back.

I had decided to get a dog at a late stage in life so that the darling lives as long as I live. The separations I’d suffered of Chappy, my first dog and the kittens were traumatic.

I’d also decided that the pup will be male, and will be called Happy (to rhyme with Chappy). When I took Chappy for a walk, I had to fend off her male admirers and I did not want to do that again.

Fate had something else in store. A cousin who breeds dogs showed us the newborn Happy on a video call, and the adoption was finalized. We had to wait for two months till the pups were being fed by their mother.

Later, this cousin insisted that we take ‘a pair’ – a male and a female. I tried to ward him off saying that raising two pups in an apartment is not possible. But he remained insistent.

My husband was convinced by the argument that two will remain busy playing with each other.

I saw Aria much later on a video call. She is cute and appeared to be sharper than her sibling. Aria (pronounced Aa-ree-a) was a name I thought of last minute, combining my husband’s name (Amit) and mine.

She proclaimed herself to be the queen within a day of entering the house. And she constantly reminds me of FM with her quirky ways.

The driver who had dropped the kittens off at the farm came to meet us, and she devotedly sat on his feet, wanting to play with him all the time. Signs of recognition? I’m not sure…

For my own satisfaction, I like to believe that Aria is a reincarnation of FM. She came into this house in a totally unplanned manner and now owns the house. My husband, Happy and I are expected to kowtow to her demands all the time.
