Shades of life

Chosen poem

Once it was the color of saying …. by Dylan Thomas

Shared on Poetics: Dead Poets Society

when dreams were the stuff of imagination
romance nothing more than infatuation

I walked through narrow streets; wanted to own the sky
Till someone told me an air-hostess is just a waitress
You might as well be a pilot
You might as well learn to fly

Planes were just silver patches on blue
I dreamt of carpeted cabins; being a boss
I painted books in colours of thought
Till disparaging remarks turned it nought

When power dressing became a passion
the toughest thing in life was competition

Life happened on trodden cobbled pavements
watching fancy cars carry undeserving people
the next promotion was the biggest nightmare
How I hated the boss’s glance and steeple

I stepped out of the race; met elation
A while ago, I’d have called it a vacation

      1. I think I see that more now, rereading. I’ve been babysitting all weekend and woke up at 630 this morning to the arrival of 8 month old twins. I shouldn’t post until my brain is fully fictional in the morning. I always thought that would be a fun job, though, flying on a plane in some capacity. Not sure I’d want to pilot one.

  1. I like where the Dylan Thomas poem took you, Reena. I remember those days when romance was nothing more than infatuation and people pissing on my dreams. I like the lines:
‘Life happened on trodden cobbled pavements
watching fancy cars carry undeserving people’
and the final couplet made me smile.

    1. Glad you found something to smile 😀 I used to watch not-very-smartly dressed people who couldn’t speak English in fancy cars and think why them? It took growing up to realise wealth has nothing to do with the attributes I thought were ‘smart’.
